Configurable Data Validation in a Single Interface
The Challenge
A B2B healthcare technology partner sought to validate a strategic thesis:
Could a single, configurable intake interface trigger an automated sequence of validation services—without being tied to a specific clearinghouse or third-party vendor?
They needed:
- A single data entry interface for patient and guarantor demographics
- A configurable validation engine allowing clients to choose which automation services to activate (e.g., insurance verification, demographic validation)
- A framework capable of integrating with any clearinghouse or third-party provider via API or web service
- A rapid proof of concept (POC) to test commercial viability before committing to full-scale product development
The solution had to be vendor-neutral, modular, and scalable—supporting both insured and self-pay workflows.
The Solution
Our team developed a cloud-based application called AccessExpert, designed as a lightweight yet powerful automation orchestration layer.
The system provided a clean, unified interface for entering:
- Patient demographic data
- Guarantor information
- Visit details
- Optional insurance information (supporting self-pay workflows)
Once data was entered, AccessExpert initiated a configurable automation sequence capable of selectively performing the following validations:
Demographic Verification – validated patient and guarantor demographic information in real time.
Insurance Verification – confirmed eligibility and benefit details when insurance information was provided.
Coverage Discovery – searched for unreported insurance coverage when no payer information was available.
Prior Authorization Check – determined whether prior authorization was required and whether it had already been submitted.
Medical Necessity Validation – assessed whether medical necessity requirements applied and generated required documentation (e.g., ABNs) for signature.
Presumptive Eligibility Scoring – evaluated potential qualification for presumptive benefits in uninsured scenarios.
Open Integration Framework
The architecture was intentionally built as a vendor-agnostic orchestration layer, allowing integration with any third party offering a web service or API.
This enabled the partner to:
- Maintain existing clearinghouse relationships
- Leverage contracted vendors
- Swap or add services without rewriting core workflows
- Future-proof their ecosystem
The proof of concept demonstrated that validation automation could be modular, configurable, and commercially viable.
